10 THINGS MOMMY LOVES ABOUT ME:

1. Owen is the most cheerful kid I've ever met. He's very easy going and happy all the time. Nothing can make me as happy as I am when I'm playing with Owen. He's most happy when the people around him are happy, too.

2. I've never met a kid who loves food as much as he does! He could eat all day, make himself sick, and still want to eat more.

3. He is so funny! He loves to make us laugh.

4. Those huge cheeks! There is nothing more kissable in the world.

5. He is so curious. He'll concentrate so hard to figure something out.

6. Owen is so smart! If I show him something once, maybe twice, he'll pick it up right away. I showed him how to put a ball in the elephant toy's trunk once and he took the ball out and put it right back in. Nothing gets past this kid.

7. He is a BEAUTIFUL boy! I know I'm a little biased, but he really is so handsome. Just looking at him can put a smile on my face.

8. I love how he is always making noise. He loves to hear himself talk. Its still mostly gibberish, but hearing those cute noises he makes while he's playing or when he's excited make my whole day.

9. He is so good with naps and bed time. He goes to sleep so easily for mommy and daddy. We might have to go in once to give him his pacifier and lay him back down, but that is the extent of it and then he's down for the night.

10. I love how excited Owen gets when he sees his daddy. He starts squealing and all but runs to Mitch to play with him. The smile on Owen's face is the biggest I've ever seen it when daddy comes home from school.

there is cuteness all around

The theme of the day is "cute."

We had an awesome Relief Society activity Thursday where we decorated mini Books of Mormon to give as gifts or to keep for ourselves! They're to go along with a challenge that our ward RS gave us to read the whole BoM by the end of the year (which I am completely dedicated to accomplishing. :0D ) We used scrapbook supplies and covered them with contact paper so they'll stay in good condition. I have always been slightly creatively challenged, but even I've got to admit that they turned out kinda cute.

I think I'm keeping the red and blue one for myself and I'm going to give the green one to Owen when he's old enough to appreciate it and not rip it to pieces one page at a time. :0)

Something that made my night even better is when Wex came over. She works at an elementary school in the Chinese immersion program where they had a book fair recently. She found this children's book called I Am Small about a baby penguin and decided she had to get it for Owen (Btw, Wex is O's Chinese Godmother.) I gotta say, I'm SO glad she got us this book.

As you can see, I wasn't kidding. It is THE cutest thing ever! The story line, the illustrations, everything! Seriously, if you haven't seen this book, buy it, borrow it, steal it, GET IT! Its absolutely adorable. (Disclaimer: I don't actually support stealing. Make an attempt to use one of the first two methods before you resort to thievery.)

I've decided to learn to recognize and appreciate all the little cute things around me. There are so many, especially with a kid like Owen around. ;0)

book club- the help

Tonight was the first of many incredibly cultural meetings of the book club I'm in. Okay, maybe they're not "incredibly" cultural, but I do feel extremely proud that I spent a night discussing the social views and relationships discussed in The Help rather than watching all the latest episodes of my favorite shows. Now, I know, The Help is a big trend right now and everyone is reading it/ watching the movie, but from someone who has both read and watched it, it really is an inspiring and enjoyable story. Sometimes there is a reason "everybody is reading it" rather than just being a popular.

The group of girls we have is so much fun! Having such different personalities is so beneficial cause we get all points of views and opinions. I'm so bummed that I forgot to get some pictures of the group. Don't worry though- you'll definitely see some next time.

I tried some new recipes tonight for our book club. I borrowed my mother-in-law's Apple Cider recipe (which is to die for!) and I made Mini Brie and Apple Quiches. Apple and Brie cheese in a little crust- sounds good right? Not my favorite. I think its cause I'm a texture person. If its the least bit gooey, I have a really hard time with it, even if the flavors are incredible. But at least I tried something new and the girls seemed to like it, so I feel pretty accomplished!

So there you have it! My week is shaping up to be pretty incredible and productive, despite the sickness that is plaguing my family. Keep those prayers coming- I don't want to lose this streak now! :0)

the week ahead

So I'm approaching this coming week with equal parts anticipation and dread. Its going to be really busy, but that will mean I have less time to waste watching reruns of Law and Order: SVU and what-have-you. The part that is killing me is that all the dates and times keep changing on me, some for the better and others for the more complicated.

Here is a rundown of what is about to happen to me (keep in mind that I'll have to be wrestling my almost 11-month old son midst all these activities, trying to keep my house somewhat tidy, especially for all the times people are coming to my house, and I haven't even listed my husband's class schedule):

MONDAY (today):

FHE at the Roberts' house at 6:30 pm
*bring dessert to feed at least 10

TUESDAY:

Kickboxing at 9:15 am
Discussion with the missionaries at the Forch's at 7:30 pm
*try to remember to invite her to the Relief Society activity on Thursday

WEDNESDAY (this is one of the ones that I'm looking forward to, but I'll be glad when its over):

Mommy School at the Garvin's at 11:30 am
Dinner with the missionaries at our home at 5 pm
*make Salsa Pork Roast over rice with salad and dinner rolls
Book Club at our home at 7:30 pm
*make Mini Brie and Apple Quiches and Cider in apples

THURSDAY:

Kickboxing at 9:15 am
Give massage to Alene at our home at 2 pm
*send Owen and Mitch to Gym
Relief Society Activity at church at 7 pm
*bring Jackie and Jennifer and $6

FRIDAY (when I think of Friday, I just let out a big sigh of relief "Aaaah"):

Temple trip
*find babysitter
Discussion with missionaries at Forch's at 7:30 pm

SATURDAY (another day I'm looking forward to, but will be happy when its over):

Work at UCMT from 6 am to 3 pm
*send Owen and Mitch to Ellie's baptism at 4 pm
Give massage to Erika at our home at 4:30 pm

SUNDAY

Teach Gospel Principles at 12 pm
Cousin Dinner at our home at 5:30 pm
*make Chicken Pockets

So as you can see, not impossible, but definitely enough to justify a little bit of stress. My time management skills will definitely be tested. Pray for me! :0)

forgotten blessings

So it has been a significant amount of time since I posted on my blog. Truthfully, I think it is because I feel like my life right now is pretty uneventful. I tend to watch a lot of television. Its sort of my coping mechanism. See, if I'm completely absorbed in tv, then I'm not stressing about all the dishes on my counter or the piles of clean laundry that need to be folded on my loveseat. And I'm not worrying about money or food stamps or job openings. Its actually extremely effective. But today, I've been catching up on my friend's blog. She has the amazing opportunity to travel the world with her church praying and ministering and truly living. I envy her. I wish so strongly that I could travel the world and help and learn first hand of different cultures and people. I covet the life she is leading.

I realized something after regretting certain life choices and beating myself up over this mundane life I lead: I am so blessed! With all that I have, how dare I consider my life mundane! How dare I regret that paths that my life has taken! I am surrounded by people who love me and, more importantly, I have the Gospel of Jesus Christ in my life! How is it that I forget this so easily? How is it that I am not running down the street sharing this with everyone I run into? How is it that I am not elated and excited about this every minute of every day? How am I not sharing this with my friends and neighbors every opportunity that I have? I am so lucky to have the Gospel in my life, why would I not want other people to be as lucky as I am?

So today I made a decision. I'm going to make my life eventful. Not "travel-the-world" eventful, but eventful enough that I don't covet what others have. Enough so that I look forward to the day ahead. Eventful enough so that I allow others to have the same knowledge I have of my Savior Jesus Christ and all the blessings He has afforded us. Eventful enough so that I am a happier wife for my husband, mother to my child and friend to those I surround myself with. After all, life is what you make it and I am done being a couch-potato mama.

updated "weight"

In January of 2010, I posted on my blog about trying to reach what one (credible) website deemed my "ideal" weight. Needless to say, what with getting pregnant the next month and all, I failed to reach this goal. However, I really don't blame myself. Its extremely difficult and dangerous to lose weight when growing a baby in your belly. Thats not really the point, though. My point is that I am re-motivated to lose weight. Unfortunately, I now have even MORE to lose! Now, I'm not unrealistic. I have re-evaluated the information I entered and am now, since having a baby, rating my body frame as "medium" rather than "small." So here are the new logistics:

Body Frame: Medium
Current Height: 5'1"
Sex: Female

Based on the information you provided, your desirable body weight without clothes should fall between

106 lbs and 120 lbs

I am proud to say that my habits are better than they were in my previous "weight" post. I go to kick boxing every Tues. and Thurs. and Mitch and I go to the gym at least one other day during the week. I'm eating a little healthier- more fruits, less carbs. I'm feeling good! Lets hope this progress continues.

...about time!

Today, one of my adorable adoptive cousins mentioned that I haven't blogged in a LONG time. Cori-Jo is right. So I am here to make that comment false!

This past Saturday was AMAZING! Mitch recently left his job at Big-O Tires to pursue his own entrepreneurial dreams so he was able to completely dedicate Saturday to spending time with our little family. Owen really hasn't had any outside hang-out time since he's been born, what with it being winter and all, so since it was almost 70 degrees, we decided to go to the park across the street from our house. We tried to put Big O (my favorite nickname for my little man) in one of the baby swings, but its still WAY too big for his little 4.5 month old body. We still got a cute picture of him in it.

Then we just laid out and played on a blanket. Owen really loves playing with his daddy. Mitch is SO good with him and I couldn't ask for a better baby daddy!

There are some really cute pictures of Big O with his daddy and I noticed recently that there are literally ZERO of me and him since the first week of his life. This really bugs me! I mean, he's really cute and I'm really cute so why don't we have uber cute pictures together? Its cause I'm the one TAKING all the pictures!! So I made Mitch take a couple while we were at the park.

I have been frustrated with our HOA and their landscaper for awhile. I mean, I want people to see the front of where we live and think its somewhat inviting and presentable. Something about aggressively chipping paint on the door frame and bright orange rust all down the pole on our front steps and a big dead bush in front of our window doesn't scream "Come on in!! We love it here!" I informed the HOA of my complaints probably about 9 months ago and nothing has been done. So after our little venture to the park, Mitch and I decided to take my frustrations into our own hands.

We went to Home Depot and bought some soil and gloves and a hoe and came home to begin our project. We planted a few lettuce seeds in a little bucket on our front step so we can make salads in a couple of weeks. We chipped off more of the paint on our door frame and sanded it down. Then, Mitch took a saw to the bush and took off all the big branches. We then took turns with the hoe digging and tearing up roots trying to dig up the stump. We made quite a bit of progress, but after a dried up worm was tossed in my direction, we decided that that was a project better completed on another day. All in all, it was a wonderful, productive day.

Que Sunday- and 4+ inches of snow. :0/

It was so nice to spend some time outside in beautiful weather and get our hands a little dirty after having a miserably cold winter. I'm definitely looking forward to a summer full of playground trips and playing in the garden and fun outdoor family activities.

eat pray love

“To find the balance you want, this is what you must become. You must keep your feet grounded so firmly on the earth that it’s like you have 4 legs instead of 2. That way, you can stay in the world. But you must stop looking at the world through your head. You must look through your heart, instead. That way, you will know God.”

Bella Baby Photos

Here are all the photos that were taken by Bella Baby at the hospital. They were only on the website for about 2 weeks, but my mother bought me the CD with all the photos for Christmas and I posted them on facebook. So if you didn't have the opportunity to see them before, here they are now! :0)

Virginia is for lovers

This post is a long time coming. Sorry about the delay! One resolution of mine is to try to keep up with this blogging thing. We'll see how well that works out. This was written 10/14/10.

I had the opportunity to travel to VA one last time before the baby comes this past weekend. I'm so glad I got to go! I flew out Wednesday night with my mom's mom and sister and my dad's mom and sister. Our flight was delayed 3 hours and we had HORRENDOUS turbulence at the start of our flight. I've never been nervous for my life on a plane until this very moment, but it passed and we got there safely at about 3 am. We were able to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday Friday night. It was a total surprise, mostly because his birthday isn't for another couple weeks. Its not actually until Halloween, but we celebrated it early so everyone could be there. It was so nice to see all of our family friends show their love and support for my dad and our family. He really is an inspirational man and a WONDERFUL father and I'm so grateful to have him in my life. It was a total 60's themed party so we were all dressed in our best hippie gear. We had a caricature artist at the party that my dad has been friends with for a long time who made a wonderful poster for my dad to keep to remember the party and all his family who was there. Here it is:

The party was a huge success! The reason we celebrated his birthday early was because our family had all flown out for my sister's sealing. She was sealed to her husband and baby son, Mason, the following day. It was an amazing experience. I wasn't able to go into the temple with them, but just being there and seeing how happy the experience made them made me excited for when my husband and I get sealed next month. I love my sister so much and am so proud of her and the decisions she is making. :0)
